KOLKATA: Following the police firing and death of two persons at Diamond Harbour's Mainak-Nainan on Thursday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger at not being informed on time and the manner in which it was handled. Sensing the CM's mood, DGP Naparajit Mukherjee asked IGP (South Bengal) to rush to the spot and report back. Local sources claimed that at least two 14-year-olds, Rezina Khatun and Swapan Maira, were hit by bullets. Rezina was hit on the head and died instantly. Swapan was hit in his stomach was being shifted to Kolkata. Rezina's body was lying in the village with angry villagers ringing it.

Another villager, Sahiba Biwi (32), was also brought dead to the Diamond Harbour hospital with a gaping wound on her head. Among the injured was the Diamond Harbour SDPO. The CM reacted strongly to allegations that the two villagers were killed in police firing. Terming the incident "unfortunate and shameful", she said the policemen should have been more careful. "I was in Writers the entire day but wasn't aware of it. There are other ways to handle such situation," she said, instructing that police should not aggravate tensions further and instead try to pacify the villagers. "The incident of police firing will be probed in detail. There are certain norms to be followed. But I do not believe all villagers had attacked police. Some of them surely were provoked. Some political leaders had instigated them. Let the investigation be complete and everything will come out," she said.

जयपुर. तीन साल में डेढ़ लाख से अधिक लोगों से 300 करोड़ रुपए से ज्यादा की ठगी कर फरार हुए गोल्ड सुख कंपनी में कई धनाढ्य लोगों ने 50 लाख से अधिक रुपए लगाए हैं, लेकिन अब सामने आने से डर रहे हैं। कई वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों ने भी निवेश कर रखा है। ये अधिकारी मामले की जांच कर रहे पुलिस अधिकारियों से फोन कर स्थिति का पता कर रहे हैं। सूत्रों की माने तो कंपनी के डायरेक्टरों ने दीवाली पर कई रसूखदार लोगों को सोने के बिस्किट व अन्य महंगे उपहार दिए थे। कंपनी से जुड़े लोग जो ठगी के शिकार हो गए है उनका कहना है कि ऐसे लोगों की पूरी लिस्ट कम्प्यूटर में है।

कंपनी के दो निदेशकों को पुलिस ने बुधवार रात गिरफ्तार कर लिया। आठ अन्य निदेशकों की तलाश में लुक आउट नोटिस जारी किया गया है। पासपोर्ट के आधार पर पुलिस ने इनकी पूरी जानकारी लेकर दबिश दी, लेकिन पता नहीं चला। शक है कि इसके कुछ निदेशक बैंकॉक जाने में सफल रहे हैं। उधर, ठगी के शिकार सैकड़ों लोग आंदोलन पर आमादा हैं। पुलिस ने कंपनी के तीस से अधिक बैंक खातों को फ्रीज (रोक) करवा दिया है। पुलिस ने बुधवार शाम को कंपनी के तीन मंजिला शोरूम के ताले खोले। यहां सोना तो नहीं मिला, लेकिन दो तिजोरियां पुलिस के हाथ लगीं। इन्हें अभी खोला जाना है।

KN Police: Banglore Police: Increase police strength to control crimes, says former Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IPG)

BANGALORE: The number of existing police personnel is not enough for future and measures should be taken to increase their number in the State, former Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IPG) Neelam Achuta Rao said. Speaking at a farewell programme organised at Kormangala Parade Grounds on Thursday, he said, “New layouts have come up in many parts of the State, including Bangalore and there is a need to increase the number of police personnel to control crimes. The Police Department has a tough time ahead.”

Mentioning that the department had received many facilities, he said, “In my 35 years of service, even under� lot of political pressures and strict restrictions from officers, I have performed my duty within the legal limits. Police personnel� are made to work in two shifts for 12 hours. The� government can ease the burden on the police and can make them work in three shifts and provide them more facilities”. DG&IGP Shankar Bidari described Neelam Achuta Rao as one of the able officers who carried out their duty efficiently without any black mark.� City Police Commissioner B G Jyothiprakash Mirji and other officials were present on the occasion.�� DGP A R Infant did not attend the event.

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the investigation into the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. Stating that the Gujarat police could not be “relied upon” to conduct an impartial probe, the High Court asked the CBI to consider the case as an “exceptional one having national ramifications.” A Division Bench, comprising Justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari, also directed chairman of the High Court-appointed Special Investigation Team Rajiv Ranjan Verma to file a fresh FIR within a fortnight and hand over all relevant papers and documents to the CBI.

The case relates to the gunning down of Mumbra (Mumbai)-based college girl Ishrat Jahan and three others — Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Sheikh, and two alleged Pakistani terrorists — by the Gujarat crime branch police near Kotarpur on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004. While the investigation so far by the SIT was limited to establishing whether the encounter was “genuine” as claimed by the Gujarat police, the CBI has been directed by the High Court to also look into an alleged terror angle. The Gujarat police had claimed that Ishrat and the other three were Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives and in Gujarat on a mission to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi to avenge the 2002 carnage. The three-member SIT, which submitted its report to the Division Bench last month, had come to the conclusion that the encounter was “not genuine” and that the four were killed much earlier. The High Court asked State cadre IPS officer Satish Verma, who was a member of the SIT and had expressed a willingness to continue with the probe if so desired by the court, to provide all assistance to the CBI. It directed the State government to spare him whenever the agency required his help. Rejecting the State government's plea to allow the police to investigate the case, the Bench said such an inquiry would not only be not “reliable,” but also fail to instil confidence among the victims and the public in general because of the involvement of a number of senior police officers in the fake encounter. Besides, “all top officials of the State up to the rank of the then DGP may fall within the ambit of the investigation in connection with the registration of another/fresh FIR,” and therefore investigation by the State police would not be desirable. The Bench also recorded the possibility of the police tampering with evidence to protect its officers.

Mumbai: One has often heard of couples indulging in acts of affection being rebuked by police officials for misbehaving. However, the tables were turned when a deputy commissioner closed in on a police jeep only to find that a constable was with a bar girl inside the jeep with a businessman. The incident occurred on Wednesday night when Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Kishore Jadhav was on night duty and found a parked white police jeep standing at the corner of LG Road around 2 am near Sena Bhavan.

"When Jadhav got down to check who was in the jeep, he noticed a man running from the vehicle. Later, when he opened the door, he was shocked to find a 57-year-old man and a 27-year-old bar girl in the jeep," said an officer. When taken to Shivaji Park police station for further questioning the duo revealed that the girl was a bar dancer and the businessman knew the constable SM More, who was attached to the Motor Vehicle Department. Investigations also revealed that the vehicle belonged to Senior Inspector Baburao Zipru Gavit (local arms division III). "The businessman told the officials that after More had dropped Gavit home at Dadar, he had taken the vehicle and asked a bar girl to join them in the jeep," said the official adding that the duo had been booked under Sec 110 (indecency) of the Bombay Police Act.

VADODARA: When the city policemen turned up for their annual firing practice at a firing range in Halol last month, they were a surprised lot. Instead of the usual .410 musket rifle, they were handed over AK-47s and INSAS rifles for firing at their targets. Having handled only .303 rifle and .410 musket rifle all their life, many of them were not prepared for using automatic weapons. For the first time ever, over 1,900 policemen including traffic cops from the city were imparted training to fire from AK-47, INSAS and (self loading rifle) SLRs.

The move came in the wake of terror attacks and looming threats over big cities in Gujarat. The firing practice was held from November 1 to November 5 and November 12 to November 30. "The musket rifle doesn't have magazine and it can fire only one round at a time. We wanted to train the cops in handling the latest rifles so that they can retaliate swiftly during terror attacks," city police headquarters police inspector Kuldeep Sharma, who imparted the training in automatic weapons, said. "During any terror attack, the constables and traffic cops posted on city roads become first victims. Training in handling automatic weapons also increases the confidence of cops and they won't have to wait till the commandos or senior cops reach the spot," Sharma told TOI.

Currently, the police have 18 AK-47s, 105 INSAS rifles and 90 SRLs that are used by police escort teams, commandoes and senior cops. According to police officials, most police constables and traffic cops don't take the firing practice seriously as they think that only armed cops, senior police officials and commandos are supposed to handle arms. "When terrorists opened fire in Mumbai two years ago, the cops posted on city roads became soft targets. We want our cops to be prepared for such attacks," added Sharma, who insisted that all cops be trained in automatic weapons. Over 70 women cops, too, were trained to fire automatic weapons. Every cop was given five rounds to fire and most of them performed averagely as it was their first experience. "We used these automatic weapons for the first time and it was a good learning experience. Handling modern weapons does increase our confidence," police sub-inspector Rahim Sheikh said. According to senior police officials, Gujarat is probably among the only few states that still provides outdated rifles to the police despite the fact that it is always high on the terror threat lists and has witnessed several attacks in the past.
