This seems to be the latest mantra taken up by traffic and thana police and special squads have been formed to check the cases of heavy vehicle drivers on highways.
Police officials ,however ,claim that after consuming liquor , the judgement power of the drivers gets impaired a threat to road safety. Experts claim that the country has laws to check the drunken driving but its effective implementation is still to be worked upon. The Motor Vehicle act -1939 has a clause which states that driving by a drunk person shall be punishable at the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with a fine which many extend to Rs 2,000 or both.
As per law, drinking and driving was not allowed to be mixed up, but its amendment in 1994 ,an amount upto 30mg per 100 ml of blood has been permitted to a driver.
