HR Police: Gurgoan Police: अब जेंटलमैन बनेंगे पुलिसवाले, English language, personality development training for local cops
GURGAON: In order to communicate with residents in a friendly and effective manner, city policemen are being imparted with soft skills training.
"Most of our staff comes from the rural parts of Haryana. They need training to learn etiquettes," said a senior police officer. Gurgaon police have received several complaints where residents have found police constables to be rude and high-handed in their approach.
Last year during the Commonwealth Games, city police organized a few sessions on the basics of English language and personality development for the local cops. Those sessions were mainly designed to train the constables in communicating with the visiting foreigners. That, however, was not enough. Senior police officers have realized a need for constant training and development in this area. As a result, such training sessions are being organized frequently, with the focus not just on the English language, but also overall personality development.
According to the police commissioner, S S Deswal, soft-skill training has become an integral part of the annual programme. "We are organizing such training sessions frequently. Constables, head constables, and ASIs are regularly selected for various communication programmes," he said.
Deswal said that the ability to communicate effectively is an important part of the required skill-set for a policeman. "The level of education in society is going up. And the police department has to keep up to the rising standards. Police need to reflect the character of the millennium city," he added.
Such training modules are being seen as a good sign. But are they effective? S K Gupta, a resident of Sushant Lok, said that he was yet to come across a cop who talks politely. "They always talk in an ill-mannered way. Most of them are offensive, but one doesn't have any option," he added.
In 2010, Gurgaon police hired a personality development institute named, Hero Mindmine, to train its personnel in soft skills. Vivek Sharma is the regional manager and was the project head for the training of Gurgaon cops. "We had a 40-day session with cops in Gurgaon, and over 1,000 cops were trained," said Sharma.
He said that police personnel in Haryana are known to be tougher than their counterparts elsewhere"That is why there is need in Gurgaon for such training to be made more frequent and more systematic," he said.
