Gujrat Police: modi-IPS sanjeev bhatt case: Bhatt under threat, says wife, BJP backs arrest
Click to play video
New Delhi: A day after the arrest of suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt, his wife Shweta Bhatt on Saturday alleged that he was under threat and was not being allowed to meet his lawyer.
Shweta Bhatt, the wife of the cop, has written a letter to the top cops and senior government officials in this regard.
In the letter, Shweta pointed that her husband had been "surprisingly shifted to the City Crime Branch which has bad reputation of fake encounters".
She added that the branch was directly under the control of the present Chief Minister.
Bhatt, who had accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of abetting the 2002 riots, was arrested on Friday.
He has been charged with forgery and conspiracy.
The arrest came after one of his juniors, K D Pant, alleged that Bhatt had forced him to file a false affidavit against Modi.
The affidavit had said that Bhatt was present at the February 27, 2002 meeting at which Modi had allegedly told the police to go slow on the rioters.
Search operations were also conducted by the police at the residence of the suspended officer.
Bhatt, however, refused to comment on the arrest saying, "I cannot say anything right now as I am in police custody. It is not the right time. If I want I can say lot of things but would not like to comment. It is now for media to decide what is right and what is wrong."
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has justified Bhatt's arrest.
Gujarat party in-charge Balbir Punj said, "The arrest is absolutely justified. Just because you've abused Narendra Modi, it doesn't buy immunity from law. If you've broken the law, you must be willing to face consequences."

WB Police: Police Revolt: पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार ने ली राहत की सांस, as IRB jawans end strike...
In a huge relief to the West Bengal government, agitating India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel -- engaged in anti-Maoist operations in Junglemahal -- withdrew their stir on Thursday evening. They were on hunger strike since Wednesday demanding, among other things, more leave and transfer from Junglemahal.
The move followed a visit of DG (Armed Police) Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti, who assured them that their grievances would be considered.
Sources said the government had been badly shaken by the near-revolt of the state para-military force and suspected outside provocation. Alarmed, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee decided to send Chakrabarti to Shilda in West Midnapore to quell the protest.
"Things are normal now. They have withdrawn their hunger strike," Chakrabarti told The Indian Express from the IRB's Shilda camp. He said that he would submit a report to the state government on Friday.
"No uniformed force can be allowed such an indisciplined act,'' Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh said.
Trouble started last week when 13 jawans of the Shilda camp were sent for security duty in Naxalite-affected Junglemahal. The jawans said the situation there required more forces.
When their request was refused, they took leave without taking permission. The authorities then cancelled their leave and issued show-cause notices against them.
This prompted about 50 Shilda jawans to start a hunger strike. They demanded more leave, transfer from Junglemahal, promotions and more service facilities.
Raising slogans, they demanded that either the chief minister or her representative come and talk to them.
In an unprecedented move, they covered their faces and held press conferences. Senior officers were even stopped from entering the camp.

PUNE: The row over the appointment of the district government pleader (DGP) and public prosecutor (PP) has finally come to an end with the state law and judiciary department nominating lawyer Ujjwala Pawar for the coveted post.
Pawar on Friday took charge of her new appointment from the outgoing DGP Sadanand Deshmukh. She is the first woman officer to become a DGP. Pawar was earlier the additional public prosecutor (APP).
The issue of nominating the DGP had been pending with the government since the last two years. There were several prosecutors in the race for the post. The decision to appoint Pawar was finally considered by the department on August 30.
Pawar holds a degree in commerce and has done masters in law. She started practicing at civil and criminal law in 1987. She was appointed as APP in 2000. Pawar has secured conviction in a number of sensational murder cases like, Dr Deepak Mahajan, hotelier Chandrakant Khaire, call centre employee Vidya Ghorpade and her son.
She has been appointed as a special public prosecutor to conduct trial in organised crime cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. She is also representing MSEDCL as a special prosecutor at Ichalkaranji.
Pawar secured 17 convictions in 2011. Her appointment as the DGP is for three years. Her priority as head of the prosecutors in the district is to improve the conviction rate. The DGP plays a key role in giving advice to top government officers.
Meanwhile, Vidya Mishra took charge as the new registrar of the district and sessions court on Friday.

IGREW up in Shivajinagar police line. The best thing my father did was he always told me the job of cop is an opportunity to serve the country and made me believe I can be a police officer if I work hard,” said a proud Kalpana Sawant, the first woman in the history of 106 years of Maharashtra Police Academy in Nashik to be awarded the Sword of Honour, given to the best trainee police sub-inspector in the batch.
Kalpana (23), who joined the Pune police as a staffer through a recruitment drive in 2006, said, “I always aspired to be an officer. After serving for three years, I decided to pursue a degree in political science and simultaneously prepare for competitive exam for police sub-inspector’s post.”
Kalpana was awarded the Sword of Honour at the passing out parade of the Maharashtra Police Academy on Thursday. On Saturday, she was felicitated in Pune by DGP Ajit Parasnis.
In 2010, Kalpana not only cracked the exam in the first attempt but also stood second among all girls who qualified. Her father Bhausaheb Sawant is an assistant sub-inspector with Swargate police and elder brother is a constable at Vishrantwadi police station. Her mother is a homemaker. The family is from Dingale village in Sawantwadi. “But I was born and brought up in Pune and attended Apte Prashala. My higher secondary education till Class XII was at Modern College. I completed BA in political science externally from the University of Pune and am pursuing MA in the same subject.”
