India Against Corruption, claimed that the response was as encouraging as at New Delhi's Ramlila Maidan in August. It claimed 30,000 supporters attended the event by 4.30 pm on Tuesday. The city police put the attendance at 4,000-4,500. Both figures excluded 2,500 police personnel and about 500 mediapersons. Did the city, where more than half the voters do not show up for polling, chose to remain indifferent as usual to politically significant events. Or did the yearend holidays keep Anna supporters away?

Political commentator Surendra Jondhale blamed the poor turnout on Hazare and his team's weakening political credibility. "A working day is an insignificant reason but what really caused damage is that it [the protest] is ill-timed and politically not correct."

MUMBAI: It's a comedy of errors, set in motion by the act of following orders unthinkingly. Last month, after Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik instructed the traffic department to fine all bikers wearing helmets without ISI certification, hundreds were booked for the offence. Farcically enough, these included owners of foreign bikes who wear helmets certified by Australian, Italian and American authorities.

"The purpose of the police commissioner's directive was to send a strong message to those using cheap plastic helmets which can't protect even a cyclist. But the cops carrying out the order have failed to understand that helmets certified by the American Department of Transportation (DOT) are among the safest in the world," says Debashish Ghosh, owner of a Harley Davidson bike. Adds Vijay Jain of Wheelieboy Adventure India Ltd, "We appreciate the traffic department's initiative to make sure people use ISI-certified helmets, but we are looking for a slightly higher standard as our bikes are more powerful and expensive. Our helmets are more reliable and have undergone stringent tests."

मुंबई॥ भ्रष्टाचार निरोधक ब्यूरो ने शाहू नगर पुलिस स्टेशन से जुड़े एक सब इंस्पेक्टर देवानंद अहीरे को 5 हजार रुपये की रिश्वत लेते गिरफ्तार किया है। अहीरे एफआईआर दर्ज करने के बदले में एक व्यक्ति से यह रिश्वत मांग रहा था। यह व्यक्ति पेशे से इस्टेट एजेंट है। उसके यहां सार्वजनिक गणेशोत्सव का सामान रखा हुआ था। इसी बात को लेकर उसको कुछ लोगों ने धमकी दी। इसी धमकी की वह एफआईआर दर्ज कराना चाहता था।

भोपाल। आखिरकार हरदा थाने के टीआई महेंद्रसिंह मीणा को हटाकर लाइन अटैच कर दिया गया है। श्री मीणा के स्थान पर वरिष्ठ इंस्पेक्टर बीएल धुर्वे फिलहाल टीआई का प्रभार संभालेंगे। जिला पुलिस बल की समीक्षा कर उसे पुनर्नियुक्त किए जाने की आवश्यकता है। टिमरनी थाने के टीआई आरपी कुसमाकर को भी हटाकर जिले से बाहर तबादला किया गया था। हरदा ब्यूरो के मुताबिक एसपी आरएस उइके ने देर शाम टीआई मीणा को थाने से हटाकर लाइन अटैच करने के आदेश जारी किए। अपने अधीनस्थ स्टाफ के साथ ही वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों के खिलाफ की गई बयानबाजी के कारण उन्हें सिटी कोतवाली से हटाया गया है। गौरतलब है कि अग्रवाल समाज के प्रतिनिधिमंडल के सामने खुद टीआई ने उन्हें लाइनअटैच कर दिए जाने की इच्छा जताई थी। टीआई श्री मीणा की अशोभनीय टिप्पणियों से आक्रोशित होकर अग्रवाल समाज ने एएसपी को ज्ञापन भी दिया था। स्मरण रहे कि जिला पुलिस बल की खामियों को भास्कर डॉटकाम प्रमुखता से प्रसारित करता रहा है। पुराने प्रकरणों में पुलिस की विफलता पर टीआई श्री मीणा की कार्यप्रणाली पर सवाल भी उठाए थे।

सतना (मप्र) : सतना और रीवा की पुलिस ने घाटकुंडी थाना अन्तर्गत हल्दी के घने जंगल में एक मुठभेड़ में पांच लाख के ईनामी डकैत सुंदर पटेल सहित पांच डकैतों को मार गिराने में सफलता प्राप्त की है। पुलिस सूत्रों के अनुसार मुखबिर से सूचना मिली थी कि डकैत सुंदर पटेल अपने साथियों के साथ हल्दी के जंगल में वन विभाग द्वारा बरसात आदि से छिपने के लिए बनाए गए शेड में पहुंचने वाला है। इस पर रीवा रेंज के पुलिस महानिरीक्षक गाजीराम मीणा एवं सतना के पुलिस अधीक्षक हरि सिंह यादव के नेतृत्व में पुलिस पार्टी ने उक्त स्थान को घेर लिया और डकैतों को आत्मसमर्पण के लिए ललकारा। इस पर डकैतों ने पुलिस पार्टी पर हमला कर दिया। जवाब में पुलिस ने भी फायरिंग की और काफी देर तक चली मुठभेड़ में सुंदर पटेल सहित सभी पांचों डकैत मारे गए। पुलिस ने इस दौरान 250 राउंड जबकि डकैतों ने पुलिस पर 200 राउंड फायर किए।

सुंदर पटेल के अलावा जिन डकैतों को मारा गया है, वे सभी ईनामी डकैत थे और उनमें से भोला, श्रीपाल और नत्थू पर 15-15 हजार तथा खरभूषण पर 75 हजार रुपए का ईनाम घोषित था। पुलिस ने मृत डकैतों के पास से पांच राइफल, एक सेमी आटोमेटिक रायफल तथा छह मोबाइल और सिम बरामद किए हैं। डकैत सुंदर पटेल तीन साल पहले बिछिया नरंसहार में नौ लोगों की हत्या कर प्रकाश में आया था। उसने पिछले एक माह से सतना, रीवा और उत्तरप्रदेश की पुलिस के नाक में दम कर रखा था। पुलिस पिछले एक सप्ताह से घेराबंदी कर उसकी तलाश में जुटी हुई थी।

BHOPAL: Amid civil authorities finding it difficult to carryout development initiatives Madhya Pradesh's Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected district of Balaghat, state police says its own wing could be pressed into service for taking up activities such as construction of roads in the disturbed tribal areas. "Madhya Pradesh already has a separate wing of 7th battalion, known as Pioneer, which is capable to handle such development initiatives. If the government entrusts the task to us, this agency can be expanded and deployed for taking up works in the Naxalite affected areas of Balaghat district", Director General of state Police S K Raut told The TOI.

PATNA: The Patna Traffic Police on Saturday launched its website - www.patnatrafficpolice.in - so that Patnaites can get information about the position of different roads. Patna SSP Alok Kumar said that one can go to this website to know about traffic congestion and get other information about traffic system. "One can save himself from traffic jam and take another route to reach his destination after getting in touch with the website," he said. The website would also provide information about penalties for different traffic offences, he said and added that a Traffic Helpline number - 2219543 - has also been launched. It would be functional 24X7. The SSP said that one can give advice or lodge any complaint online.

As per district transport officer (DTO), Patna, 5,36,514 two-wheelers, 38,876 auto-rickshaws, 1,61,360 four-wheelers of all types and 48,139 buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles had been registered. Altogether, 7,84,889 vehicles had been registered in Patna district alone. About 80,000 rickshaws are plying in the city, while on an average 75,000 vehicles ply in the city daily. The SSP said four CCTVs would be installed at Dak Bungalow Crossing, Exhibition Road, Income-Tax roundabout and Patna Junction roundabout in the coming days. He advised the people of the city to use lanes and by-lanes to save themselves from traffic jams in the city as it would consume less time and reduce distance also. "By changing routes, they can easily reach their destination without getting stuck in traffic jams," he said. The SSP said that foreign section of the Patna Police has also developed its own website - www.fro.patnapolice.com - for its smooth functioning. It would help the applicants in getting latest information and ensure transparency in the working of police, he said
