MP Police: Gwaliar:
Bihar Police: Patna: '

Orissa Police: Bhubaneshwar:
BHUBANESWAR: Finally, police have identified Maoist leaders Jane Salem and Satyam Ghabede as the masterminds of murdering the then Umerkote MLA, Jagabandhu Majhi. A Nabarangpur court has issued non-bailable warrants against the Chhattisgarh-based duo and their associates, police sources said on Wednesday.
The warrants followed DGP Manmohan Praharaj's a media statement on January 2 that police had identified Majhi's murderers and have "credible information" against them.
Delhi Police:
The Delhi Police filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Wednesday against the Delhi High Court’s decision that acquitted the three accused in the murder of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar due to lack of evidence.
The HC had acquitted former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer RK Sharma and two others giving them the benefit of doubt on 12 October, 2011.
The High Court had upheld the trial court verdict convicting the fourth accused, Pradeep Sharma, but acquitted the other three, including RK Sharma, after the former IPS officer appealed against the lower court’s verdict. The other two people acquitted were Satya Prakash and Sri Bhagwan Sharma. “These are questions which we cannot answer on the basis of the material before us. The quality of evidence before us is not of a high calibre,” the HC had said adding that the call records, the key document, is riddled with so many problems that it could not be relied upon.
The HC also said that the prosecution failed to establish the link between RK Sharma and the killer, and even crucial records relating to the call details were tampered with and could not be relied upon.
Sharma was officer-in-charge of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) when the case against him was filed; he put in his papers in 2002.

Mumbai Police: Interpol Seminar:
In a first of sorts, the Mumbai police crime branch, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Interpol wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), organised a one-day Interpol Awareness Programme for its officers at the Police Club in Azad Maidan on Friday.
Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) said that 95 officers from across 93 police stations and all units of the crime branch participated in the exercise. “While the police stations were represented by police inspectors (PIs) and detection officers such as police sub-inspectors (PSIs), the crime branch was represented by PIs,” said Roy.
The seminar was addressed by Arup Patnaik, Mumbai police commissioner; NS Kharayat, assistant director, CBI, Interpol; DK Ghosh, PRO, MEA (CPV Division and Extradition); Amarchand Sharma, under secretary, MEA, among others.
Patnaik said the aim of the programme was to make officers aware of the procedures and guidelines framed by the MHA and MEA in New Delhi for extradition, ways of seeking legal assistance from various countries as per the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs) and extradition treaties.
According to Roy, of late, the Indian police have stepped up their efforts to get fugitive criminals from other countries with help from Interpol. Their requests, in case of crimes involving Indians abroad, too have increased. “In such a situation, we need more people to investigate overseas crimes and prepare the letter rogatories for foreign courts to bring back wanted criminals,” said Roy.
In view of the increase in work, the Mumbai police are contemplating expansion of their extradition cell, said Roy. The cell is currently headed by inspector Salini Sharma, who is aided by two PSIs in the task.
MP Police: Alirajpur:
An 18-year-old tribal boy allegedly committed suicide while in custody inside a police lock-up. The incident occurred in the Sorwa police station, 15 km from Alirajpur on Friday afternoon.
Nakla Badaliya was picked-up by the police after the death of Nanli Nahariya, a 20-year-old Bhil tribal woman from village Kosba. Nakla was prime accused in the murder of Nanli Nahariya and taken to the police station on Thursday after the deceased woman's family named him as the culprit who killed her by shooting an arrow.
Police remained tight-lipped not wanting to even acknowledge the custody death. However, the district collector Rajendra Singh and superintendent of police Chitra Narayan rushed to Sorwa police station to take stock of the situation.
Police sources said that Nakla Badaliya was reportedly found hanging from the ceiling of the lock-up. But how he found the rope or the cloth with which he hung himself is not known. The question that also remains unanswered is how an-18-year-old youth managed to hang himself from the ceiling inside the lock-up at 2 in the afternoon without any policeman noticing it.
On Wednesday, Nanli Nahariya was returning home with her brother. On the outskirts of the village a poisonous arrow struck her and she fell down unconscious. A day later, the woman succumbed to her injury and the family reported the matter to the police.
The Alirajpur-Jhabua belt has a pre-dominant Bhil tribal population who still carry bows and arrows for self- defence. Nakla was one such youth who dressed in the traditional Bhil attire and hunted with bows and arrows. It is not known how and why, his arrow hit 20-year-old Nanli, hailing from the same village.
Sources in the police department argued that Nakla was depressed that he his arrow had allegedly killed a woman of the village. He was depressed and possibly that was the reason he took the extreme step in Sorwa police station.
VADODARA: Crime Branch is currently handling over 30 cases, including that of gangster Mukesh Harjani and the Rafiq Gaay murder case. However, it just has one police inspector (PI) and four police sub-inspectors (PSIs).
The serving PI, too, has been transferred to Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), but the city police are not releasing him as they do not have got any replacement for him. It is not just the crime branch that is facing shortage of PIs. Other police departments too are facing the same crisis.
With the incidents of chain-snatching and loots on rise in the city, police need more manpower to patrol and investigate cases. But, they keep facing shortage at one or the other level. Police commissioner Satish Sharma, however, said the shortage is temporary as promotions of PSI to PI level are due this month.
"The Crime Branch is a sensitive department and it needs cops with expertise. Entire city comes under its jurisdiction that makes its workload a bit too much. Lack of proper manpower affects its work quality directly," a police official said.
City police have sanctioned posts of 39 PIs, but only 25 PIs are serving here as of now. The Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB), special branch and Kishanwadi police station are currently without PIs. The posts of readers to police commissioner and joint police commissioner, too, are vacant.
Crime Branch has sanctioned posts of eight PSIs and 72 police constables. However, police officials said they at least double the number of constables in crime branch to help it function efficiently. Sources said police department had sent a proposal for increase of staff strength to the government, but no action has been taken in the matter so far.
"There is shortage of PIs, but it is temporary. The promotions of PSIs are due this month, so we will be able to fill the post of PIs soon," Sharma told TOI.
