Kerala Police: Neighbourhood police system launched in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The city police on Thursday launched 'Neighbourhood Police' system in Coimbatore. Under the system, specific areas and streets will be assigned to special sub–inspectors (SSIs) and sub-inspectors under Law and Order officials of the respective police station. Their numbers will be made available to the public and stuck on strategic locations in the neighbourhood so that they can be contacted during emergency situations.


City police commissioner Amaresh Pujari said that the public of Coimbatore can identify their area police and avail their number. They can share their problem without hesitation and the police will take action. "There is a growing gap between public and police. We have to bridge this gap with effective policing," said Amaresh Pujari.

The initiative was officially inaugurated by district collector M Karunagaran who also stressed on the importance of the initiative to curb crime and maintain the law and order scenario in the city. The officers involved in the project will be given special visiting cards and also asked to conduct daily half an hour sessions with the inspector of law and order units in the city.
