As the festival season approaches, most of police stations in the city have formed special teams to keep tab on chain snatchers.
The incidences of chain snatching near local marketplaces increase during this time of the year. The police officials reveal that chain-snatchers make use of the crowds which will now increase with each passing day.
The officials add that many criminals have started indulging in chain snatching because it is easier than any other crime and a lot of money can be made quickly due to the high prices of gold.
According to the police officials, the police stations which have marketplaces in their jurisdiction are reporting, on an average, 3-4 cases of chain-snatching every day. Incidents of chain-snatching are mainly being reported from areas like Andheri market, Jogeshwari, Oshiwara, Malvani, Dongri and Mumbai Central.
The police have been moving around in plainclothes so as to keep a lookout for those indulging in chain-snatching. The cops have also prepared a list of all known chain-snatchers from their area and have been keeping a tab on their activities.
Nakabandi is also carried out on the roads and people, especially those on bikes, are being intercepted for search. “We are doing our best to bring down the instances of chainsnatching” said a police officer.
The police are also taking the help of eagle brigade, locals who volunteer to help in policing, from the area. The officials said that the cops are also trying to alert the citizens about the chain snatching and have been advertising it through the local cable television network.
They have been meeting with the locals in the area. Even the shop-owners at the markets are being used as informers and they have been instructed to keep close watch on such anti-social elements.
