Delhi Police: Anna Hazare: Anna Hazare brought a change in the hearts of criminals too, 35% decline in the crime rate since Anna began his fast

NEW DELHI: Has Anna Hazare brought about a change in the hearts and minds of criminals too or is Delhi Police making a tall claim? Believe it or not, senior officers are claiming that there has been a 35% decline in the crime rate since Anna began his fast.

The cops claimed the huge deployment of forces across the city for the protest and the just-concluded Independence Day celebrations have helped bring down the crime rate. How a city that is used to witnessing at least seven heinous crimes a day has not seen even one major murder or rape in a span of six days is quite puzzling.

Sources in Delhi Police say around 400 FIRs are filed in the city daily (the rest are a huge number of diary entries which do not usually show up). However, between August 13 and August 15, around 300 FIRs were filed daily. Sources attributed this to two things - thousands had travelled outside the city even as 18,000 security personnel kept guard. However, it is the period between August 16 and August 19 which has come as a major surprise. This is the time when the media captured the groundswell of support for Anna. As a result, claim cops, only 210 FIRs were registered daily at the police stations.
